Fly infestation what to do?

July 7th, 2022

The hot season is often synonymous with the return of insects and especially flies. It is indeed a more than unpleasant presence, especially when it is inside houses. The flies that infest homes in this way generally belong to one or other of the three most common species. The following article will give you information on the types of flies that can infest our homes and what to do to get rid of them.

The different varieties of flies

As mentioned above, the flies infesting our homes most of the time belongs to three rather widespread species. The first being the earthworm cluster, which is a dark gray fly that measures about 8 to 10 mm in length, unlike the housefly, the wings of the earthworm cluster overlap when it is motionless. They are also larger and are most often found in homes surrounded by large lawns or near parks. Another widespread species is the face fly which is a highly harmful insect for livestock. Typically, they can spend the winter hibernating in houses to infest them during the summer. Face flies are more likely to take over farmhouses or those surrounded by pasture or other livestock. Finally, our homes can also be infested with the blowfly, also called blue blowfly or green blowfly. It is a large fly whose body is differentiated by metallic reflections. Its presence is noticeable in homes in winter and early spring. It develops in manure, excrement or in the animal remains.

Can flies cause damage in the house?

The meat fly or the face fly can contaminate food because of their ways of reproducing and their mode of feeding. Earthworm cluster flies are mostly harmless to health. His presence is no less annoying. Homes that are near landfills or livestock farms are much more likely to have flies’ problems. The same is true if waste is poorly managed near the home. The problem becomes more obvious as the temperature rises. This is when the flies become active and gather in the windows since they are attracted by the light.

How to get rid of it?

All it takes is a tiny crack around a door or window frame to allow flies to enter the house. Prevention is therefore the best way to combat the problem. Check if the mosquito nets are well installed and if there are any openings that could serve as an entry for flies, make sure to seal them. Installing weatherstripping around windows can also help. Once inside, the easiest way to get rid of it is to get out the good old fly swatter. If they are in large quantities, you can use a vacuum cleaner, but be sure to dispose of the contents of the bag outside. There is also traps on the market designed specifically for this type of problem. In any case, if you are overwhelmed by the situation, do not hesitate to contact an exterminator. He will be able to solve your problem and put in place tips to prevent the situation from happening again.
